Interview of Jessie McDonnell
By Sahalie P. 4th grade
I interviewed Jessie McDonnell, an Edison alum. She was visiting her son who is my neighbor.
What years did you go to Edison? I went to Edison for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. From 1959-1961.
What was the playground like? It was a great playground. There were swings and climbing structures.
What did you do at recess? We would play on the monkey bars and do twirls. We also liked to climb on the climbing structures.
Who was your favorite teacher? What did you like about her? Mrs. Schweppi in 3rd grade. Our classroom was right across from the library. The school store was in our room. Kids would come and buy pencils and paper. We also had a rabbit in that class.
How many kids were in your class? Usually 20-25.
What was the Edison neighborhood like? There was a candy store across the street. We would go there after school and buy candy necklaces. (Editor’s Note: this is now the Vertulfo’s house. You can see traces of old Lipton ads in the windows.)
How did you get to school? I walked. Edison was just a neighborhood school so most kids walked.
What was lunch like? Milk was 2 cents and lunch was 10 cents. We got ice cream on Fridays.
Were there any activities like music or gym? We had music, gym, library, and dance class. Once we marked the gym off into streets and rode big tricycles around. We practiced hand signals and waiting for the light.
